The Hotel Windsor celebrated its 125th anniversary in December 2008 - the only luxury hotel in Australia to reach this milestone, and well ahead of the world's other leading grand hotels.
The Hotel Windsor was built in 1883 and pre-dates some of the world’s famous leading grand hotels such as the Savoy in London, which was built in 1889, the Waldorf Astoria in New York which dates back to 1893, and the Ritz Paris, which opened in 1898.
It was built at the height of the state’s gold rush and early rural prosperity and in the late 19th century the hotel’s Grand Ballroom, the Grand Staircase, and the twin cupola-capped towers reflected the finest in Victorian architecture and design.
For more than 100 years, The Hotel Windsor has been a pivotal centre in Melbourne and Australia for the political and social milieu. This was illustrated when Australia’s constitution was drafted at The Hotel Windsor between February and March 1898.
For decades it has been the preferred hotel for Prime Ministers, politicians, actors, performers and celebrities and has a unique place in Victoria’s history and in the hearts of many Melbournians.
